Dollar Index Closes the Week Lower: Bond Buybacks and Global Market Implications
The US dollar index is poised to close the week lower as markets view the Treasury Department's expanded bond buyback plan as a temporary measure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that buybacks could be further increased, while the US 30-year Treasury yield is hovering around 5.25% and the 10-year yield around 4.70%.
Global Currency Market Volatility
With US government debt exceeding $40 trillion, other currencies have gained against the dollar. The euro is nearing a three-month high, and the pound is approaching a six-month high. The New Zealand and Australian dollars also gained, confirming the dollar's weakness. This indicates a decrease in investor demand for US assets and a shift towards alternative currencies.
Risk Assets Boosted
The dollar's weakness has boosted demand for risky assets. Bitcoin is on track for a 17% weekly increase, reaching its highest level in over two months. Gold is poised to close the week with a gain of over 3%. This move indicates that investors are turning to traditional safe-haven assets and trying to profit from the weakening dollar.
Assessment
This decline in the dollar index is closely related to the impact on markets of the US's increasing debt burden and expanding bond repurchase plans. Investors have begun to diversify their portfolios as interest in US Treasury bonds decreases. In the coming period, the actions of the Treasury Department and US economic data will be decisive in determining the direction of the dollar index.
