SNDK at ~$1,600: breakout story meets a valuation reality check
SanDisk is trading around the $1,600 area after an exceptionally volatile August. The stock recently surged more than 35% in a single week, reached above $1,800 during the rebound, and then suffered a sharp profit-taking wave. The latest market action shows that SNDK is still one of the strongest AI-memory names of 2026, but momentum has cooled considerably. With the stock still far below its June record near $2,354, the next move depends heavily on whether buyers can defend the current support zone.
The chart is sending two different messages
The bullish side is obvious: SNDK has recovered dramatically from its late-July low near $1,012, and the stock remains massively higher on a year-to-date basis. But the recent rejection around $1,828 is equally important. Technical analysis from August 18 identified $1,827.99 as a key resistance area after the rebound reached a major Fibonacci retracement zone. A failure to reclaim that level keeps the possibility of another corrective leg alive.
At approximately $1,600, I therefore see SNDK as a high-volatility decision zone rather than an obvious chase.
My key price map
The first support area is around $1,570–$1,600. This zone is particularly important because recent moving-average readings cluster around this region. A successful defense followed by a move back above $1,650 would improve the short-term structure.
Below that, I would watch $1,500–$1,530, followed by approximately $1,300–$1,310 as the much more important structural support. A technical analysis published this week identified $1,308.53 as a critical breakdown level; losing that area would significantly increase the probability that the recent rebound was only corrective.
On the upside, $1,650–$1,680 is the first recovery hurdle, followed by $1,800–$1,830. A decisive breakout above $1,828 would be much more meaningful than simply moving back above $1,650.
Above that, the market could begin targeting $2,000, while the previous record around $2,354 remains the major long-term resistance reference.
Momentum has cooled
The latest technical readings show why I would not blindly buy SNDK simply because the company has a powerful AI story.
As of August 19, RSI(14) was around 43.7, indicating that momentum was no longer overbought. MACD remained positive at approximately +10, but several other momentum indicators were still signaling weakness. The moving-average picture was mixed, with six moving averages generating buy signals and six generating sell signals.
Another technical snapshot showed RSI around 40.5 and MACD at approximately -25.2, highlighting how quickly the short-term momentum picture can change in such a volatile stock.
That divergence between indicators is important.
SNDK is not currently displaying the clean momentum profile of a stock breaking into fresh highs. It is attempting to stabilize after a violent correction.
Volume is part of the story
Recent trading activity has been extremely elevated compared with quieter periods. SNDK's rebound was accompanied by substantial participation, including millions of shares changing hands during several major sessions. Historical data showed approximately 3.68 million shares on August 13 and 3.24 million on August 14, while earlier August sessions also recorded multi-million-share volume.
That tells me institutional and momentum traders are paying attention.
But high volume is not automatically bullish. Heavy volume during a decline can represent distribution just as easily as accumulation. The ideal confirmation would be a move back above $1,650–$1,700 accompanied by expanding volume rather than another low-volume bounce.
The fundamental catalyst is much stronger than the chart
This is where SNDK becomes particularly interesting.
SanDisk reported $20.25 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue, while adjusted earnings and profitability benefited dramatically from the recovery in NAND demand and pricing. The company has increasingly positioned itself around AI-driven storage and data-center demand rather than relying purely on traditional consumer flash storage.
At its August 13 Investor Day, SanDisk outlined a long-term model targeting mid-to-high-teens annual revenue growth from fiscal 2028 through 2030, alongside ambitious margin expectations. The company also said it intends to return 100% of excess cash to shareholders after funding strategic investments.
That gives the long-term bullish thesis considerably more substance.
AI is changing the NAND equation
The most important structural catalyst is the amount of data being generated by AI.
AI inference, training and increasingly complex data-center workloads require enormous storage capacity. SanDisk is positioning its NAND technology directly into this expansion. Recent company commentary has highlighted high-bandwidth flash and new storage technologies designed for AI workloads, while major technology customers are validating the broader opportunity.
Even more interesting are SanDisk's new business models with large data-center customers. Recent reporting indicates that the company has secured approximately $93.9 billion of minimum contracted value through 2028 from eight data-center customers at floor pricing. If those commitments translate into sustained shipments and margins, they could significantly improve earnings visibility.
That is one of the strongest arguments for the long-term bull case.
But the market already knows the AI story
This is the main risk.
SNDK has already experienced an extraordinary repricing. The stock remains up several hundred percent in 2026 despite its correction from the June record. Analysts have become increasingly optimistic, with J.P. Morgan recently assigning a $2,250 target and Citi maintaining a $2,100 target.
Those targets imply meaningful upside from the $1,600 region, but they also demonstrate how much expectation is already embedded in the stock.
If NAND prices weaken, AI-storage demand disappoints, hyperscaler spending slows or margins fail to meet expectations, the same valuation that creates upside can accelerate downside.
Bullish scenario
My bullish setup is straightforward.
If SNDK holds $1,570–$1,600, reclaims $1,650–$1,680, and then breaks $1,828 with strong volume, I would view that as a meaningful confirmation that buyers have regained control.
Potential upside zones would then be:
$1,800–$1,830
$2,000
$2,100–$2,250
A return toward the previous high near $2,354 would require continued earnings strength and a much broader recovery in semiconductor sentiment.
Bearish scenario
The bearish setup begins if SNDK repeatedly fails near $1,650–$1,700 and loses $1,570 with expanding selling volume.
A move toward $1,500 would then become increasingly plausible.
The major invalidation zone for the broader recovery is around $1,300. A decisive breakdown below $1,308 would indicate that the recent rebound may have failed and that the stock is beginning another major corrective phase.
I would not call SNDK structurally bearish simply because it falls from $1,600 to $1,500. The real concern begins if the stock loses the deeper support structure.
My short-term outlook
At around $1,600, my bias is cautiously bullish, but I prefer confirmation over chasing.
The fundamental story remains powerful: AI-driven storage demand, stronger NAND pricing, data-center expansion, long-term customer agreements and an ambitious financial outlook all support the long-term case.
Technically, however, SNDK still has work to do.
$1,600 = decision zone
$1,650–$1,680 = first momentum confirmation
$1,828 = major breakout level
$2,000 = psychological target
$2,100–$2,250 = major upside zone
$1,500 = first major downside warning
$1,308 = structural bearish invalidation
These are analysis levels, not guaranteed outcomes.
For me, the best setup would be a controlled retest of support followed by a volume-backed recovery, rather than buying after another vertical candle.
SNDK has already shown that AI-storage demand can create extraordinary upside.
Now the market needs to prove that the earnings can grow fast enough to justify the valuation.
**My view: bullish long term, cautious short term, and strongly confirmation-dependent around $SNDK
