Rayo Vallecano vs Alavés — Can Rayo Find a Way Through?
This is a difficult match to call because both teams come into the game with very different situations. Rayo Vallecano have the attacking quality to cause problems, but their defensive situation and the temporary change of venue make me much less confident about giving them a straightforward win.
Rayo started the season with a frustrating 1–2 defeat against Sevilla. The two late penalties they conceded were especially concerning because they showed how quickly their defensive concentration can disappear under pressure. That becomes even more important here because their usual home advantage will not be available. With Vallecas temporarily closed because of safety concerns, the match has been moved to Butarque in Leganés. For a team that normally feeds off the energy of its home crowd, that is a significant change.
Their defensive changes are another issue I cannot ignore. Several important defenders have left during the summer, while Kumbulla has also had a muscle problem. That means the chemistry across the back line may still be developing. Rayo can still be dangerous going forward, especially with Álvaro García coming off a goal in the opening round, while Tsitaishvili could add another attacking option after being registered. But they need to find a better balance between attacking and defensive transitions.
Alavés, on the other hand, could hardly have asked for a better start. They defeated Getafe 3–0 in their opening match and looked confident in both boxes. They created 18 shots with 8 on target, which shows that the result was not simply the product of one lucky moment. Mariano was particularly impressive after coming off the bench, contributing a goal and two assists, and the team looked much more complete than I expected.
Their recent form also gives me confidence. Alavés have gone unbeaten in their last five matches across competitions, with three wins and two draws, scoring nine goals and conceding only two. Three clean sheets during that run are especially interesting because Rayo may struggle to break down a disciplined defensive unit.
There is also some history between these teams. Rayo won both league meetings against Alavés last season, so they clearly know how to hurt this opponent. However, I don't think those previous results should be taken too literally. The circumstances are different now. Rayo no longer have the same defensive personnel, they are not playing at their normal stadium, and Alavés appear to be entering the match with greater squad stability.
For me, the key battle will be in midfield and during transitions. If Rayo can win the ball early and get García involved in dangerous areas, they can create problems. Tsitaishvili could also become important if Rayo are able to attack the wide spaces. But if Alavés can stay compact, absorb pressure and attack the spaces left behind by Rayo's full-backs, I think they can make this a very uncomfortable game for the hosts.
I expect a relatively cautious match rather than an open goal-fest. Neither side has a reason to completely lose its shape early, and Alavés have already shown that they are capable of defending patiently.
My lean is therefore toward Rayo Vallecano or Draw rather than taking a straight Rayo win.
Pick: Rayo Vallecano or Draw
Expected score: 1–1
Alternative score: 1–0 Rayo Vallecano
The biggest factor for me is whether Rayo's defensive problems are solved quickly enough. If they stay disciplined, their attacking quality can make the difference. If those defensive gaps appear again, Alavés have enough confidence and structure to punish them.
Football is unpredictable, so this is a pre-match opinion rather than a guarantee. The key for me is Rayo's defensive organization versus Alavés' current confidence and efficiency.
