Short Liquidations Shake the Market: $2.7 Billion Record

The surge in the cryptocurrency market that began on the morning of August 19th created a historic wave of liquidations in the derivatives market. According to Coinglass data, a total of $2.975 billion in positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with $2.7 billion of that being short positions. This figure surpassed the previous record of $2.47 billion recorded on October 11, 2024, becoming the largest daily short liquidation in the history of the cryptocurrency market.

The Anatomy of the Liquidation Wave

The magnitude of the liquidations alone tells only part of the story. Approximately 105,370 investors were affected by this wave. The peak occurred during the four-hour period when Bitcoin rose above $68,000, during which approximately $1.4 billion in short positions were liquidated. In fact, $1.14 billion worth of cryptocurrency short positions were cleared in a single hour.

Looking specifically at Bitcoin, $662 million worth of BTC short positions and $366 million worth of Ethereum short positions were liquidated. These figures show that the rally wasn't limited to Bitcoin but spread across the entire market. Liquidations were concentrated on major exchanges, including Gate.

The Short Squeeze Mechanism

This liquidation wave was the product of a classic "short squeeze" scenario. Investors who had long been expecting a decline had increased their short positions, believing that Bitcoin would continue to consolidate in the $64,000-$65,000 range. However, the unexpected price surge forced these positions to stop-loss orders or be liquidated. Each liquidated short position implies a new buy order in the market, which pushes the price further up and creates a chain reaction.

Catalysts and Market Reaction

The US Treasury Department's decision to increase long-term bond repurchase limits to $4 billion, effective September 9th, signaled increased liquidity in the market, boosting risk appetite. This macroeconomic development was the primary trigger for Bitcoin's surge from the $64,000-$65,000 range towards $70,000.

For Gate users: A liquidation event of this magnitude serves as a reminder of how fragile the derivatives market can be. The $70,000 level is now a psychological and technical threshold. A daily close above this level is critical for the continuation of the uptrend. However, after such a large short sell-off, it's possible the market will find a new equilibrium, and the accumulation of long positions could trigger a potential correction. In the coming days, the Senate's progress on the CLARITY Act and the Jackson Hole meeting will be the main factors determining the market's direction.
