#ETH暴涨20%突破2300美元 Ethereum Moves Sharply Overnight: Two Whales Clashed and Sent the Market Soaring
Ethereum surged rapidly last night, leading many to assume that major bullish news had emerged. However, a thorough search of the news revealed nothing.
On-chain data shows that this upheaval originated from a head-on clash between two heavyweight whales taking opposing positions, compounded by a chain reaction in the derivatives market, jointly creating this short-term surge.
A typical standoff emerged in the market: one whale had been steadily accumulating coins at low levels, continuously buying spot ETH while placing large long positions in the derivatives market, waiting for a rebound; on the other side, another whale judged the rebound to be a bull trap, continuously selling spot ETH and opening large short positions, betting that the market would continue falling. As a result, the overnight market saw a highly dramatic tug-of-war: when prices moved downward, the long whale placed large buy orders to absorb selling and support the decline; whenever prices showed signs of rising, the short whale sold in batches to suppress the gains. Repeated back-and-forth battles consumed a large amount of short-term liquidity, leaving the order book very thin.
The turning point came when the price broke through a key resistance level. A large spot purchase by the long whale directly broke through the resistance line, sending the price slightly higher and straight into the liquidation zone of the short whale’s leveraged short positions. The leveraged contract mechanism kicked in, liquidating the short positions, while the system automatically bought ETH to close the positions and limit losses. This passive buying instantly amplified the upward momentum, creating a classic short squeeze and rapidly driving prices higher. Seeing the market being pushed up, the short whale did not immediately concede, continuing to dump spot ETH in an attempt to force prices back down. For a short time, the market witnessed an intense battle of “shorts being liquidated on one side while spot was being dumped on the other.” However, the chain of buying triggered by the liquidations had already gained momentum. Large numbers of retail traders and quantitative bots saw the breakout, entered the market to chase longs, and further boosted the gains, ultimately producing a short-term surge.
Aside from the whale battle, three additional conditions were indispensable:
1. Thin order-book liquidity
Overnight spot depth on exchanges was insufficient. Large orders could move prices significantly without requiring huge amounts of capital, magnifying the volatility caused by the whales’ battle.
2. A large buildup of leveraged short positions in the derivatives market
In addition to this short whale, large numbers of short positions held by ordinary traders had also accumulated below. Once prices started rising, cascading liquidations continuously generated buy orders, creating a positive feedback loop in which rising prices led to more buying.
3. The broader market provided a favorable sentiment backdrop
Bitcoin strengthened in tandem, macro risk appetite recovered, and sentiment across the crypto market turned warmer, providing broad support for Ethereum’s rebound. Many people misunderstand this: when whales fight, the winning side can supposedly make easy profits. Reality is different. Even if the longs won this round by leveraging liquidations to prevail overnight, the short whale can still adjust its entry levels and open new positions to strike back. There are no permanent winners in leveraged markets. These market battles can arrive violently, and reversals can be just as sudden.
Whales have enough capital to withstand major volatility, while ordinary retail traders’ leveraged positions can easily be washed out during repeated price wicks.
This round of gains was essentially a pulse-driven move fueled by whale positioning and a short squeeze, rather than a material bullish upgrade in Ethereum’s fundamentals. After a pulse-like rally, if no sustained inflow of new spot capital emerges to absorb selling, prices could give back most of the gains at any time.$ETH
