BioNTech Stock Jumps 22%: Moderna's Success Ignites Industry

BioNTech (BNTX) shares surged 21.96% on Wednesday's Nasdaq trading session, closing at $113.12. The intraday high was $116, and the low was $107.18. Trading volume exceeded 8.66 million, approximately nine times the average daily volume. In after-hours trading, the stock rose as high as $114.50.

This sharp rise is driven by a single development: the successful Phase 3 clinical trial of intismera, a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine developed jointly by Moderna and Merck. This combination therapy provided a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in recurrence-free survival in high-risk melanoma patients compared to Keytruda. This achievement is considered a milestone in the field of mRNA cancer vaccines.

BioNTech, like Moderna, is one of the pioneering companies in mRNA technology. The company is working on personalized mRNA cancer vaccines with its iNeST platform (Individualized Neoantigen Specific Immunotherapy), developed in collaboration with Roche subsidiary Genentech. This approach aims to train the immune system against tumors by analyzing mutations specific to each patient's tumor. However, BioNTech's progress in this area has been slower compared to Moderna. In late 2025, the company halted development of its BNT111 cancer vaccine candidate for advanced-stage resistant melanoma.

Leerink Partners analysts note that this rally in BioNTech may not be sustainable. They no longer see the company as a "net winner" in the cancer vaccine category, and this potential is not priced into the share price. Goldman Sachs analyst Asad Haider, however, draws attention to the company's other oncology assets, particularly pumitamig, which has shown "encouraging" data in non-small cell lung cancer.

BioNTech also faces significant challenges. Demand for its COVID-19 vaccine, Community, fell faster than expected, and revenues in the first quarter of 2026 decreased by 35% year-on-year to €118 million. Second-quarter revenues were also significantly lower at €106 million compared to €261 million in the same period last year. The company has lowered its 2026 revenue forecast to between €1.6 billion and €1.9 billion. In addition, a restructuring affecting 1,860 people and production facility closures have been announced. Furthermore, the fact that founding couple Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci will be leaving the company at the end of the year to start a new venture creates uncertainty regarding the management transition.

For Gate users, this rise in BioNTech is an example of the volatility created by sectoral catalysts in biotechnology stocks. While Moderna's success has had a positive impact on the entire industry, each company's own pipeline, financial structure, and management dynamics will be decisive in pricing. In the case of BioNTech specifically, it is conducting more than 17 late-stage and critical Phase 3 cancer trials, and data from these trials, along with data from candidates like pumitamig and gotistobart, will be even more decisive for the company's long-term valuation than the industry buzz generated by Moderna's intismeran success.
