Gate Event Contracts: a simpler way to trade market direction

Gate Event Contracts introduce a different approach to crypto trading. Instead of using traditional leveraged futures with margin, liquidation risk and funding rates, the product focuses on one simple question:

Will the selected asset move up or down when the event period ends?

The concept is straightforward. Choose an asset, select the direction you expect, choose an available contract price and enter the amount you want to participate with.

Currently, Gate Event Contracts support BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP, with short-duration periods of 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour and 4 hours.

One of the biggest differences from traditional futures is the zero-leverage structure.

There is no liquidation mechanism caused by leverage, and the maximum loss is limited to the amount paid for the contracts. This makes the risk structure easier to understand than highly leveraged perpetual futures, although losing the entire amount invested in an incorrect prediction is still possible.

The pricing mechanism is also interesting.

Event contract prices range from 0.01 to 0.99 USDT and represent the market's implied probability for an outcome. For example, a contract priced around 0.65 USDT can broadly be interpreted as the market pricing that outcome at around a 65% probability.

If the prediction is correct at settlement, each winning contract pays 1 USDT. If the prediction is incorrect, its settlement value becomes zero.

For example, buying 10 contracts at 0.60 USDT would cost 6 USDT. If the prediction wins, the settlement value would be 10 USDT, before applicable trading costs. If the prediction loses, the 6 USDT paid for those contracts would be lost.

Another useful feature is flexibility.

You do not necessarily have to wait until expiry. Positions can be sold before the event ends, allowing participants to take profit or reduce exposure when market conditions change.

Settlement is handled automatically when the event period expires. Gate uses Chainlink's TWAP mechanism to determine the relevant price movement, helping reduce the influence of temporary price spikes and isolated volatility.

The current structure includes:

BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP

5-minute, 15-minute, 1-hour and 4-hour events

Contract prices from 0.01 to 0.99 USDT

Minimum investment of 5 USDT per order

Minimum order quantity of 6 contracts

Dynamic fees for opening and closing trades

No funding or overnight holding fees

Free expiry settlement

The product is particularly interesting for traders who want to express a short-term market view without using traditional leverage.

However, simpler mechanics do not mean zero risk.

A 5-minute or 15-minute prediction can still be extremely difficult because crypto prices can move unpredictably in a very short period. News, volatility spikes, liquidity changes and sudden market reactions can quickly invalidate a prediction.

The most important thing is therefore not simply choosing "up" or "down."

It is understanding the probability reflected in the contract price, the potential payout, the amount at risk and the time remaining until settlement.

For example, buying a contract at 0.90 USDT means the potential payout is relatively small compared with the amount paid, while buying at 0.20 USDT offers a larger potential return but reflects a much lower market-implied probability.

That risk/reward relationship is something every participant should understand before entering.

To access the feature, users can open the Gate App, enter Futures and select Event Contracts. On the Gate website, Event Contracts can be accessed through the Futures section.

First-time users are required to review and accept the relevant innovative trading disclaimer and user agreement.

My view: Gate Event Contracts are an interesting addition to the crypto trading landscape because they turn short-term market direction into a clearly defined outcome with a predefined maximum loss.

But the simplicity should not encourage impulsive trading.

The shorter the event period, the more important timing, volatility and discipline become.

Understand the probability.

Understand the payout.

Know the maximum amount you can lose.

Then make the decision.
