Strong Recovery in the KOSPI 200 and Cautious Stance Among Retail Investors
The KOSPI 200 index is showing a remarkable recovery after a recent sharp decline. The index had fallen 33% from its June peak, and last week the drop reached 39%. This was one of the deepest pullbacks since the global financial crisis. Currently, the index is trading at 1,095, continuing its recovery trend with a 3% daily increase. However, examining the technical indicators, the MACD is in negative territory (-35.84), suggesting that this recovery does not yet fully indicate a trend reversal.
Market Dynamics and Investor Behavior
During this period, as the index approaches the 7,000 level, the behavior of retail investors presents a noteworthy picture. Local investors are turning to inverse ETFs like the KODEX 200 Futures Inverse 2X, which tracks twice the daily return of the KOSPI 200 index. A net inflow of 1.328 billion won (approximately $1 billion) into this product last week indicates investors are seeking protection against a potential correction despite the index's rise.
Retail investors' selling in the index is also noteworthy. Between August 11-14, a total net sale of 7.984 trillion won occurred over four trading days. This selling took place during a period when the KOSPI rose from 6,345 to 6,977. The net buying by foreign investors during the same period helped maintain market balance.
Capital Flows and Shifting Strategies
Behind this shift in investor behavior lies a clear trend in portfolio preferences. Korean retail investors are turning to US markets to counter uncertainties in the domestic market. Over the past month, the TIGER US S&P 500 ETF saw a net inflow of 631 billion won, the KODEX US Nasdaq 100 ETF saw 443.7 billion won, and the KODEX US S&P 500 ETF saw 348.2 billion won.
According to Yuanta Securities analyst Lee Jae-won, retail investors' strategy is evolving from trend following to short-term trading. The consistent pattern seen since July 31st is that while foreign investors buy on bullish days and sell on bearish days, retail investors are exhibiting the opposite behavior.
Outlook and Expectations
For the KOSPI to enter a sustainable uptrend, continued foreign investor buying is critical. Retail investors' current hedging-focused approach and dwindling cash reserves (decreased by approximately 40 trillion won since the beginning of June, falling to around 100 trillion won) could limit the index's upside potential.
According to analysts, the projected price-to-earnings ratio of 6.1 for the KOSPI 200 index in 2027 indicates that some valuation indicators are attractive. However, the cautious stance of retail investors and expectations of short-term volatility maintain uncertainty about market direction.
