Paradise Island in Question: Why the “Trump-linked” Tokens for the Maldives Sank Before Even Taking Off

The Trump family-linked World Liberty Financial (WLFI) project has frozen the issuance of digital tokens for the construction of a luxury resort in the Maldives for six months. What is behind this high-profile delay, and what conclusions can be drawn?

The idea was beautiful, but reality is harsher

Initially, WLFI planned to tokenize rights to income from loans that would fund the construction of the Trump International Hotel & Resort in the Maldives. Investors were supposed to receive a share of the resort’s future revenue. The project was also positioned as a serious step into the RWA sector (real-world asset tokenization).

The technical side was handled by Securitize—a platform backed by BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager. Construction was being handled by Saudi developer DarGlobal. The impression was created that this Trump venture had every chance of becoming a landmark RWA project.

What went wrong?

The reason for the delay was not officially disclosed, but insiders point to the military conflict with Iran, which dealt a serious blow to tourism activity in the region. Clearly, the economic model of a resort that is not scheduled to open until 2030 ceased to look convincing to investors amid geopolitical instability.

Six months have already passed since the announcement in February 2026, yet no public token sale has taken place. Investors have received no clear explanations regarding either the timeline or the offering structure.

What does this mean for the market?

1. The failure of RWA ambitions? This case shows that even projects with a big name and powerful partners can stumble over macroeconomic realities. Real estate tokenization is a complex process, and the “blockchain wow effect” alone does not work here.
2. “Meme” hype vs. the real sector: The project’s creators attempted to combine crypto’s fast-paced speculative nature with slow, conservative real estate. So far, this union has failed to come together.
3. Institutional interest has not faded: The very fact that Securitize was brought in shows that major players are still studying RWA. But this case is a reminder that the sector’s potential is enormous, while the road to it is paved not only with hype but also with real risks.

Conclusion

The WLFI project in the Maldives currently looks like a “frozen paradise.” It has not been shut down, but its future is in question because of external factors that no one could have predicted in the spring. For crypto enthusiasts, this is a lesson: even tokens with a “golden” name can get bogged down in geopolitics. And for investors, it is another reminder to diversify risks and not believe in fairy tales to the very end.
