Scientists visited the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and collected microscopic worms of the species Oscheius tipulae. After conducting research, experts found out that the genomes of such worms remained intact after the nuclear disaster, despite the high level of radiation
Such analysis is essential for understanding the impact of a disaster on local populations. Researchers determined the genomes of 15 worms from Chernobyl and five individuals from other parts of the planet
The fact that worms from the Chernobyl zone do not show signs of damage indicates that they are resistant to extreme conditions. The scientists emphasized that such resistance may be a feature of the species, and not the result of exposure to radiation
In addition, the researchers released 20 worms from the laboratory and tested their offspring, but found no relationship between radiation levels and DNA resistance to mutations. These results suggest that Chernobyl worms did not acquire new DNA repair abilities due to exposure to radiation, so scientists will continue to investigate factors that affect their resilience
