#Top4USBanksPlanSharedTokenizedDepositNetwork
Top 4 US Banks Plan Shared Tokenized Deposit Network Targeting 2027 Launch ✨
JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi, and Wells Fargo are building a joint tokenized deposit network. The network will be operated by The Clearing House and is targeted for launch in the first half of 2027. The network offers a direct challenge to the stablecoin model, keeping funds within the regulated banking system with FDIC coverage while providing the same 24/7 programmability.
The Infrastructure: A Bank-Owned Settlement Layer
🔹 The Clearing House will operate a payment company network jointly owned by major commercial banks.
🔹 It is designed to allow participating institutions to clear and settle tokenized deposits at any time and connects blockchain activity with existing payment rails.
🔹 BNY, HSBC, PNC, Santander, TD Bank, Truist, and U.S. The bank also supports the initiative.
How Tokenized Deposits Differ from Stablecoins
🔹 Issuer: Tokenized deposits are regulated banks; Stablecoins are non-bank entities.
🔹 Collateral: Tokenized deposits are directly received over commercial bank funds; Stablecoins are reserve assets held elsewhere.
🔹 Regulatory Status: Tokenized deposits are covered by FDIC insurance and remain within the regulated banking system; Stablecoins are not FDIC insured and regulatory oversight varies.
🔹 Consensus: Tokenized deposits operate on a shared blockchain network that can be used interoperably between member banks; Stablecoins operate on a public blockchain with limited interoperability with traditional banking.
The Competitive Context: Bank Led vs Crypto Native
🔹 JPMorgan Kinexys platform already processes over $7 billion in average daily volume and has processed over $40 trillion in transactions since its launch.
🔹 Citi Token Services operates in the US, UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong; Citi transfers billions through its own network.
🔹 Shared system overcomes the limitations of these closed networks. JPMorgan Payments co-chair Max Neukirchen stated that to scale up on-chain corporate payments, a regulated market infrastructure solution is needed for the clearing and settlement of tokenized deposits. However, banks must agree on common technical and operational standards, even though they compete for many of the same corporate clients.
The Broader Tokenized Deposit Landscape
🔹 Swift Ledger: Swift launched its own blockchain-based ledger in July 2026. 17 banks across six continents are piloting live tokenized deposit transactions.
🔹 European Consortium: A separate consortium of 10 financial institutions is moving forward with euro-denominated stablecoin plans. A group of five US regional banks is targeting a Q4 2026 launch for its own tokenized deposit network.
🔹 Swiss PoC: The Swiss Bankers Association completed a proof-of-concept for a deposit token on Ethereum, demonstrating technical interchangeability and operational feasibility.
What This Means
🔹 The project represents the most significant initiative yet to leverage blockchain technology at scale while maintaining compliance and risk controls for traditional finance.
🔹 Stablecoins have reached approximately $263 billion in circulation. Deposit tokens hold funds on bank balance sheets and offer the same legal treatment as traditional deposits.
🔹 When the network becomes operational, it may allow smaller banks to access a shared blockchain payment infrastructure.
