More than 1,100 AI practitioners sign a joint petition, calling on the United States to support slowing down the pace of frontier AI development
PANews July 29, according to Sina Finance, after OpenAI disclosed that its AI tools accidentally infiltrated another company’s internal systems, more than 1,100 employees from leading artificial intelligence companies signed a proposal calling on the U.S. government to support the creation of a mechanism to intentionally control the pace of AI development when necessary, in order to prevent technological progress from happening too quickly.
The organizers said the proposal has been signed by employees from nearly a dozen companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, Google, and Meta Platforms Inc. The proposal urges the U.S. to support an international effort to set the pace for the research and development of more advanced AI systems when necessary. The proposal warns that the speed of AI development “may indeed be able to” outstrip humanity’s ability to “understand or control” it. In a statement, Google said, “We are committed to developing AI in a safe and reliable manner, so that this technology benefits society.” The proposal echoes claims recently made by multiple AI industry leaders. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, among others, had previously called for the establishment of a new international oversight body to review cutting-edge AI models and set standards.
