$DELL Plunges Nearly 15% as AI Hardware Selloff Intensifies 🧐

Dell Technologies' stock tumbled roughly 14.8% on July 28, marking its worst single-day drop since April 2025, as a broader retreat in AI hardware names accelerated . The move erased a meaningful chunk of the stock's blistering 2026 rally, though Dell still retains a year-to-date gain of over 240%.

The selloff reflects a convergence of concerns rather than a single company-specific headline. Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani published a note arguing that Dell's $60 billion AI server revenue forecast for fiscal 2027 likely depends on just three customers: CoreWeave, SpaceX's SpaceXAI, and IREN . That level of customer concentration is a significant risk to the AI narrative because a pause or deferral from even one major buyer could create sharp volatility in revenue and backlog conversion.

Valuation has also become a sticking point. Dell trades at a forward non-GAAP P/E of roughly 24x, well above its five-year average of 11x . That leaves less room for execution missteps, and any evidence of order normalization or weaker-than-expected AI profitability could pressure the stock further.

The backdrop of aggressive insider selling has added to the negative sentiment. Company executives and directors sold approximately $1.56 billion in Dell stock over the past three months, with no offsetting insider purchases . On the institutional side, options activity shifted bearish as major market participants sold over $18 million in call premium following the drop.

The bull case has collided with margin arithmetic. AI server gross margins compressed to roughly 18% in Q1 FY2027, down from 21% a year earlier . This dilution is structural: in an AI server, Nvidia accelerators, HBM memory, and networking components represent a large share of the system's value, limiting Dell's ability to earn high margins on incremental AI revenue .

The move extended across the AI hardware sector. Hewlett Packard Enterprise slid roughly 8%, while Super Micro Computer dropped around 5% . The synchronized selling confirms the session's pressure reflected a sector-wide reassessment of AI hardware multiples rather than any company-specific issue.

Analysts remain split. Evercore reaffirmed its Buy rating and $500 price target, arguing Dell remains "one of the biggest OEM beneficiaries of AI infrastructure spending" . However, the risks are now clearer: margin dilution, customer concentration, and a valuation that leaves little room for disappointment. The next major test will come on September 3, when Dell reports Q2 FY2027 results .
