At that moment, I finally understood: in critical moments, the only person you can rely on is yourself. From a boy’s personal account..
Not long ago, my ex and I argued over a small matter.
When she got angry, she blocked my contact and my phone number for good..
The next morning, I rode my electric scooter to the subway station to work like I always did.
On the way, a car suddenly changed lanes. I couldn’t dodge in time, and I fell—me and the bike—into a roadside drainage ditch more than a meter deep.
By the time I came to, the car had already driven off.
Luckily, I was wearing a helmet. My face was only scraped, but my legs and hands were badly hurt. My pants were full of xue, and I even couldn’t stand up for a while.
In that instant, I instinctively wanted to call her.
When I picked up my phone, I realized my number and her phone were still on the blacklist.
That moment really felt helpless.
I could only message my coworker to take leave. I stayed by the roadside for a long time, until I could barely stand up, got the bike out, and—thankfully—the bike was still rideable. I rode it to the hospital to treat my wounds.
Later, she found out I was injured.
The next day, she even went out of her way to come to the subway station and wait for me..
After we finally met, she didn’t say a single word of concern. She only asked:
“Why didn’t you go home first?”
Later, she said that actually she wanted to apologize, but she couldn’t bring herself to admit it.
But for some reason, at that moment, I no longer had the same urge as before—to comfort her, to explain myself.
In the end, we still lived together for a while.
Until the place we were living in got slated for demolition. She proposed breaking up.
She probably thought that I would still try to hold on to her the way I used to.
But this time, I only said calmly:
“Okay. Move out. Let’s call it a breakup.”
And that time, we really did break up.
Maybe the thing that truly ends a relationship isn’t necessarily some big event.
It’s that when you need someone, you find out no matter how hard you try, you can’t get in touch with them.
