It is reported that OpenAI and Anthropic were engaged in lobbying to block China’s open-source models
PANews July 28 news: According to Caixin, OpenAI and Anthropic have held closed-door discussions in Washington with U.S. regulators, trying to push for tighter restrictions on open-source models. What was originally a debate over technical routes has now escalated into a contest over who has the power to set industry rules. The core context behind why OpenAI and Anthropic want to restrict open source is that, in recent years, Chinese AI companies have made rapid breakthroughs in the capabilities of open-source models. Open-source models lower the barrier for enterprises and developers to use advanced AI technologies, and also help Chinese models quickly gain global users. Overseas developers and companies can directly download, modify, and deploy these models without having to pay high API call fees. This has also made OpenAI and Anthropic feel competitive pressure.
