ME News, April 28 (UTC+8): Canada’s “Elections Act Strong and Free” bill (Bill C-25) received bipartisan support in the House of Commons’ second reading vote, passed, and was referred to a committee for review. The bill’s provisions would prohibit accepting cryptocurrency political donations at the federal level. The bill treats cryptocurrency the same as money orders and prepaid payment instruments as forms of funds that are difficult to trace, and applies to registered political parties, constituency associations, candidates, party leaders and leadership candidates, as well as third-party advertising entities. The recipients of illegal cryptocurrency donations must return or remit them to the federal Department of Finance within 30 days. The report notes that Canada has technically allowed cryptocurrency political donations since 2019, but mainstream parties rarely openly accept them; by comparison, the United States still allows such donations, while the UK has already passed legislation to ban them.
