ME News, July 27 (UTC+8): Korea’s Customs Service said it seized illegal foreign exchange transactions worth 7.2 trillion won (about $72k) in the first half of this year. The Korea Customs Service said that from January to June this year, it handled 792 cases of illegal foreign exchange transactions involving violations such as illegally transferring foreign exchange abroad and concealing overseas assets. Some cases involved export companies collecting export proceeds in cryptocurrencies instead of legal tender such as the US dollar, and therefore failing to remit the export proceeds in foreign exchange back to South Korea. Lee Jong-wook, head of the Korea Customs Service, said that given recent volatility in the foreign exchange market is seen as one of the main risks facing the South Korean economy, the Customs Service will strengthen cooperation with relevant authorities including the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
