AIMPACT message, April 28 (UTC+8): In November 2023, the OpenAI board fired CEO Sam Altman, citing that he was not transparent enough with the board on safety issues. Insiders said that before the dismissal, scientist Ilya Sutskever wrote a 70-page memo detailing Altman’s opaque conduct regarding team safety and corporate governance. According to the investigation report, Altman transformed OpenAI from a nonprofit organization into a for-profit company, deviating from the original mission of open sharing. He was also found to have used Twitter data for model training without authorization, and was allegedly suspected of poaching employees from its competitor xAI and obtaining sensitive information. Several senior team members said that to secure growth and funding, Altman abandoned the core commitment to AI safety, and that the global large-scale AI projects he has pushed pose serious risks. Former board members directly criticized his lack of transparency and integrity. Altman has now returned to OpenAI as CEO, but the incident has sparked widespread industry discussion about AI governance and corporate ethics.
