ME News: On April 28 (UTC+8), Canada’s “An Act to Strengthen and Protect Elections” (Bill C-25) received cross-party support in the House of Commons second reading vote, passed, and was referred to committee for review. The bill’s provisions would ban, at the federal level, accepting cryptocurrency political donations. The legislation treats cryptocurrency alongside money orders and prepaid payment instruments as forms of funds that are difficult to trace, applying to registered political parties, electoral district associations, candidates, party leaders and leadership contestants, as well as third-party advertising entities. Any recipient of an illegal cryptocurrency donation must refund or remit it to the federal Ministry of Finance within 30 days. The report notes that Canada has technically allowed cryptocurrency political donations since 2019, but mainstream parties rarely openly accept them; by contrast, the United States still allows such donations, while the UK has already passed legislation to ban them.
