ME AI news: Among the four Fields Prize winners in 2026, three have announced they will not turn to AI research. At the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians, three of the four Fields Prize laureates publicly said they will not move into AI research, even though they believe their work will soon be automated by AGI. In its report, SemiAnalysis cited computer scientist Dijkstra’s view, saying that programming is one of the hardest areas in applied mathematics, and weaker mathematicians are best advised to stick to pure mathematics research. The Fields Prize is one of the highest honors in the mathematics community, awarded every four years to mathematicians who make outstanding contributions before the age of 40.
