ME News: On April 28 (UTC+8), Canada’s “Stronger and Free Elections Act” (Bill C-25) received cross-party support in the House of Commons during the second reading vote, passed, and was referred to a committee for review. The bill’s provisions are set to prohibit, at the federal level, accepting cryptocurrency political donations. The bill treats cryptocurrency together with bank drafts and prepaid payment instruments as forms of money that are difficult to trace, applying to registered political parties, constituency associations, candidates, party leaders and nomination contestants, as well as third-party advertising entities. Any recipient who receives illegal cryptocurrency donations must return or remit them to the federal Department of Finance within 30 days. The report notes that Canada has technically allowed cryptocurrency political donations since 2019, though mainstream parties rarely openly accept them; by contrast, the United States still allows related donations, while the UK has already legislated to ban them.
