Canada passes a bill on banning federal elections from accepting crypto political donations in a second reading.

ME News: April 28 (UTC+8), Canada’s “Stronger and Freer Election Act” (Bill C-25) received cross-party support in the House of Commons during the second reading vote, passed, and was sent to committee for review. The bill’s provisions are intended to ban, at the federal level, accepting cryptocurrency political donations. The bill treats cryptocurrency together with money orders and prepaid payment instruments as forms of funds that are difficult to trace, applying to registered political parties, constituency associations, candidates, party leaders and leadership candidates, and third-party advertising entities. Any recipient who receives an illegal cryptocurrency donation must refund it or remit it to the federal Ministry of Finance within 30 days. The report noted that Canada has technically allowed cryptocurrency political donations since 2019, but mainstream political parties rarely publicly accept them. By comparison, the U.S. still allows such donations, while the U.K. has already enacted a legal ban. (Source: PANews)
