Canada passes a bill at second reading that fully bans federal elections from accepting cryptocurrency political donations.

ME News, April 28 (UTC+8): Canada’s “Stronger and Free Elections Act” (Bill C-25) won cross-party support in the House of Commons during the second reading vote, passed, and was referred to a committee for review. The bill’s provisions are set to ban, at the federal level, accepting cryptocurrency political donations. The bill treats cryptocurrency as an untraceable form of funds together with bank drafts and prepaid payment instruments, applying to registered political parties, electoral district associations, candidates, party leaders and leadership contestants, as well as third-party advertising entities. Recipients who receive illegal cryptocurrency donations must return or remit them to the federal Department of Finance within 30 days. The report notes that Canada has technically allowed cryptocurrency political donations since 2019, though major parties rarely publicly accept them; by contrast, the U.S. still allows such donations, while the UK has already legislated to ban them.
