AIMPACT message, on April 28 (UTC+8), the OpenAI board fired CEO Sam Altman in November 2023, citing that he was not transparent enough with the board on safety issues. Insiders say that before the dismissal, scientist Ilya Sutskever wrote a 70-page memo detailing Altman’s opaque behavior regarding team safety and corporate governance. According to an investigation report, Altman transformed OpenAI from a nonprofit into a for-profit company, straying from the original mission of open sharing. He was also found to have used Twitter data for model training without authorization, and he is suspected of poaching employees from the competitor xAI and obtaining sensitive information. Several senior team members said that to secure growth and funding, Altman gave up core commitments to AI safety, and that the global large-scale AI projects he pushed carry serious risks. Former board members directly criticized him for a lack of transparency and integrity. Altman has now returned to OpenAI as CEO, but the incident has sparked widespread discussion in the industry about AI governance and corporate ethics.
