$ZEC has been through one of the more dramatic round trips of any major token this year, and the current bounce sits right in the middle of a genuinely important network transition, though one detail worth flagging upfront, I couldn't independently verify the specific "50,000 transactions per second" throughput figure for the new Zakura client, so that particular claim should be treated with some caution pending clearer confirmation.
The backdrop here matters a lot. In late May, a security researcher working with Shielded Labs discovered a soundness flaw inside the Orchard shielded pool's cryptographic code, a bug that had actually existed since Orchard launched back in 2022. The flaw theoretically could have let someone create counterfeit ZEC that would look identical to real coins, a genuinely serious problem for a privacy-focused network where verifying supply integrity is inherently harder than on a transparent chain. The market reaction was brutal, ZEC fell more than 50 percent from around $630 down to the $250 to $300 range once the vulnerability became public.
What's followed since has been a coordinated recovery effort. Developers pushed emergency patches, and the fix itself, called Ironwood, is scheduled to activate on the mainnet on July 28 at a specific block height, sealing off the old Orchard pool from new deposits and routing existing shielded funds through a public verification checkpoint called a turnstile before they can enter the new, redesigned pool. This is what lets the network verify total circulating ZEC supply in something closer to real time going forward, addressing the exact trust gap the bug exposed. Major ecosystem stakeholders have publicly backed the fix, and developers have said they're close to a full mathematical proof that the new pool doesn't carry a similar hidden flaw.
The Zakura client is a real and separate part of this story, it's a new, faster node implementation built by Zcash contributors that synced the entire mainnet in roughly four hours, compared to close to twenty-one hours for the existing Zebra client, a meaningful improvement for node operators needing to get up to speed quickly ahead of the fork.
Price-wise, ZEC's round trip has been sharp in both directions, the initial 50 percent crash was followed by a rebound back into the $400 to $500 range as the patch and upgrade timeline solidified, with the token briefly pushing above $550 in mid-July before pulling back again. The current bounce described, up around 2.6 percent while daily RSI sits deep in oversold territory near 12, fits a pattern of a token trying to stabilize into a binary, dated catalyst just two days away. That kind of setup tends to produce exactly this mix, shorter timeframes still showing bearish momentum while the daily oversold reading hints at a potential technical snapback.
For anyone tracking ZEC on Gate, July 28 is the date that actually matters here far more than any short-term RSI reading. A clean activation with the formal security proofs holding up would remove the overhang that's driven this year's volatility and could support the network's credibility going forward, while any sign of a new issue during migration, or even just a smooth-but-underwhelming rollout with no fresh catalyst, risks reviving the same sell-the-news pattern that's hit ZEC before. The technical bounce being described is worth watching, but it's happening in the shadow of a much bigger, dated event that will likely matter more than the oversold signal itself.
