The SEC Is Seriously Talking About 24-Hour Stock Trading

Something that used to sound like a distant idea is now on an actual calendar. The SEC has scheduled a public roundtable for September 17 to discuss moving U.S. equity markets closer to continuous trading. The agenda covers overnight sessions, market resiliency, and the practical problems of expanding hours.

Chairman Paul Atkins put it bluntly: “We are moving towards a new day – and night – in the U.S. equity markets.” That is not the language of a regulator who is merely exploring a concept.

What Has Already Happened

The SEC has already given the green light to 24X Exchange for 23-hour trading. NYSE, Nasdaq, and Cboe have all filed their own proposals to extend hours. These are not theoretical filings. They are concrete steps from the largest venues in the country.

The Crypto Parallel

It is hard to ignore the influence of crypto markets here. Digital asset trading never closes. That reality has quietly raised the bar for what participants expect from traditional markets. When capital can move at any hour in one part of the financial system, the parts that still sleep start to look outdated.

The Real Questions

Longer hours sound attractive until you examine the details. Liquidity in the middle of the night is usually thinner. Spreads widen. The chance of sharp, low-volume moves increases. Surveillance and operational systems have to stretch further. None of these problems are unsolvable, but none of them are trivial either.

The September roundtable is where these trade-offs will be argued in public. That is useful. It forces the industry to move from slogans about “modernization” to actual design choices.

My Current View

I do not expect full 24-hour trading to arrive overnight. I do expect the direction of travel to continue. Once major exchanges and the SEC are openly discussing overnight sessions, the old 9:30-to-4 structure is no longer sacred. It becomes a starting point that can be negotiated.

For anyone who trades both crypto and equities, the convergence is worth watching. The more the two market structures resemble each other, the easier it becomes to think about capital allocation across them without constant translation.

This is still early. The roundtable will matter more than any single headline. I’m paying attention to what problems the participants choose to emphasize and which ones they treat as secondary.

No prediction here — just recognition that the conversation has moved from “if” to “how.”
