Prosecutors in São Paulo, Brazil, have indicted World’s developer for illegally collecting iris data, demanding the deletion of the data and compensation of about $47.2 million

PANews July 25, according to Agência Brasil, Brazil’s São Paulo state prosecutors have filed a civil lawsuit against World developer Tools for Humanity and Amazon AWS Serviços Brasil, accusing them of illegally collecting iris data in São Paulo. The collection of these data mainly targeted socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, by providing economic compensation, and was focused on remote areas with busy transportation such as near metro stations and Poupatempo convenience stores. The investigation found that more than 400k people underwent iris scanning and received economic rewards ranging from 300 to 700 reais. The prosecution is seeking to halt payment or other benefits in exchange for iris data, permanently delete the collected information, and pay at least 240 million reais (about $47.2 million) in collective damages for mental harm.
