Huang Renxun leads with an open-source AI public letter, backed collectively by the industry. The most counterintuitive part is that the one spearheading it is Nvidia.
20 technology companies jointly support open-weight AI models, driven by Huang Renxun; Musk also voiced support; OpenAI’s CEO said, “Glad to see it.”
Competitors are rarely seen together, but the interest logic is clear—it’s not a matter of sentiment.
Closed-source large models are concentrated in a handful of cloud providers; Nvidia’s customers are also just a few. Open-source models run on the servers of thousands of companies worldwide, and each machine needs to buy GPUs. Huang Renxun pushing this letter is simply about opening up a bigger market for Nvidia—nothing more.
OpenAI’s stance is even more thought-provoking: companies that build a moat with closed-source models are publicly supporting open-weight models, which suggests they believe their competitive advantage is no longer in the model itself, but has shifted to data, product, and enterprise relationships. This signal is worth taking seriously.
XNVDA fell 1.47% in the short term. The market is worried that open-source will weaken Nvidia’s pricing power, but I think the logic is reversed. Open-source will accelerate AI adoption, and compute demand can only grow further—the benefit logic for Nvidia hasn’t changed.
The real variable is policy: whether open-weight will become the official path for US AI depends on the White House and Congress. With follow-up support, the industrial significance of this letter will be amplified. If security reviews categorize open-source as a risk point, the whole logic will have to be recalculated.
Don’t read this letter as a short-term catalyst—it’s a direction signal. As open-source AI grows stronger, the entire compute stack benefits together—Nvidia, storage, and data centers. You’re not going to cut exposure just because it drops 1.47% in the short term; policy signals are the most worth watching variable lately.
