PANews July 25 News, citing Caixin.com: Xiao Jun, a former commissioner of the Wuhan Municipal Supervisory Commission, had his son, Xiao Rui, launder more than HK$64 million through underground money exchanges, while also deceiving authorities with false documents to obtain Hong Kong residency rights. On July 23, the Hong Kong Regional Court sentenced Xiao Rui, 37, on all charges—four counts of “money laundering” and one count of “using a false instrument’s copy.” He was sentenced to 6 years and 9 months in prison.

It is understood that Xiao Rui argued that the large amount involved was legitimate business gains made by his mother, as well as proceeds from his sale of Bitcoin. The judge rejected this, saying that when Xiao Rui went to Hong Kong years ago to handle an application for the “Capital Investor Admission Scheme,” he could not have been unaware of the million-asset threshold. During questioning by the prosecution, Xiao Rui admitted that his mother had long been working as a nurse and in clerical roles at a hospital. The court also refused to accept his explanation that income came from selling Bitcoin, citing that there was no transaction record.
