ME AI news: On July 24, the recent longest delivery cycles for leading semiconductor manufacturing equipment have been extended to 2 times the original. Applied Materials, ASML, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, and KLA together account for about 70% of the global semiconductor equipment market, and their main equipment delivery cycles are generally extended to 1.5 to 2 times. Some equipment with a normal delivery cycle of 6 months now needs to wait about 1 year. Korean local equipment makers are seeing similar situations as well. A Korean company supplying front-end and back-end equipment to TSMC and Micron has seen some product delivery cycles increase from 3 to 4 months to 6 to 8 months; another Micron back-end equipment supplier has raised its delivery cycle to 1.5 times, with some equipment waiting longer than 1 year. Equipment delivery delays may affect the wafer fab’s planned production ramp-up schedule. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have begun closely monitoring equipment delivery status and are considering placing purchase orders earlier than originally planned to reduce the risk of equipment being unable to enter on time. This round of extended delivery cycles differs from the supply-chain disruption in 2021 to 2022; it is mainly driven by AI infrastructure investment boosting chip demand. With wafer fab expansions occurring in parallel across countries and companies, equipment orders have surged. As global wafer fab investments continue, shortages in supplies related to equipment and plant construction may persist. (Source: MLion)
