*What it is*
Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and others. Think of it as "Bitcoin 2.0" — not just digital money, but a whole computer anyone can use.
*Core idea: Smart Contracts + dApps*
- *Blockchain*: Like Bitcoin, it keeps a public ledger of transactions
- *Smart contracts*: Self-executing code on the blockchain. "If X happens, do Y" — no middleman needed
- *dApps*: Decentralized apps built on top. Examples: DeFi, NFTs, games, DAOs
*Key parts*
- *ETH*: The native cryptocurrency. Used to pay fees called "gas" and as collateral
- *EVM*: Ethereum Virtual Machine. This is the "computer" that runs smart contracts
- *Gas*: Fees paid in ETH to run transactions or deploy contracts. Higher demand = higher gas
- *Consensus*: Switched from Proof-of-Work to *Proof-of-Stake* in 2022 with "The Merge". Now validators stake 32 ETH instead of miners using GPUs. Way less energy
*What people use it for*
1. *DeFi*: Lending, borrowing, trading without banks — Uniswap, Aave, Lido
2. *NFTs*: Digital art, collectibles, tickets — most NFTs started on Ethereum
3. *DAOs*: Internet communities/companies run by token votes
4. *Stablecoins & payments*: USDT, USDC run mostly on Ethereum
5. *Layer 2s*: Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, zkSync — faster + cheaper versions built on top of Ethereum
