Just now! Musk has revealed a doomsday-level prediction: In five years, AI will outcompete and crush humans—can $BTC and $ETH still serve as a life-saving lifeline?

Elon Musk recently accepted an interview with The Economist editor Zanny Minton Beddoes, throwing out an extremely aggressive timeline. He asserted that in about five years, AI’s intelligence will fully surpass that of humans. After ten years, humans will most likely no longer be in control—he said it is “not very likely.”

He used a brutal biological metaphor: when the intelligence gap between AI and humans far exceeds the gap between humans and chimpanzees, how could you possibly expect chimpanzees to keep ruling the Earth? We are essentially evolved chimpanzees—we were eating bananas in the jungle not long ago, and we’re still eating them. The conclusion drawn from this logic is unequivocal: control will naturally change hands.

What makes the market’s spine go cold is that when asked whether the probability that “killer robots will end humanity” is still 10% to 20%, Musk did not deny it. But he offered an extremely calm fatalistic response: even if a rocket has a 10% to 20% chance of exploding and killing you, you would still choose to get on it. Because the development of AI and robots is unstoppable—even if he wanted to stop it, he couldn’t. Since it can’t be stopped, you might as well be in the situation and try to reduce the odds of the worst outcome.

Excluding an extreme event like global thermonuclear war, Musk predicts that around 2036, humanity is likely to enter a golden age of extreme material abundance, where everyone can have whatever they want. He describes this as “the most likely outcome.” His tone is matter-of-fact, yet it carries a doomsday-celebration kind of optimism.

On how to regulate this runaway monster, Musk proposed an extremely pragmatic plan: have AI giants review each other’s models. His reasoning is that government officials don’t have enough technical background to judge whether a cutting-edge model should be released, but competitors do. As long as you give them one or two weeks to review the new model, competitive pressure will force everyone to stay honest. If a company refuses to address the risks pointed out, the government steps in. He emphasized that this mechanism must be set up immediately, because AI breakthroughs can appear multiple times within a single day; the so-called “build it within six months” is far too long.

When it comes to trust issues within the industry, Musk makes no secret of his dissatisfaction with OpenAI’s current CEO, Sam Altman. He recalled that OpenAI was originally a nonprofit organization aimed at achieving open source, belonging to the world—but somehow it ended up becoming a closed-source, profit-driven company valued at $800 billion, which completely goes against the original intent behind his donation. He also revealed that the Anthropic team left OpenAI because they didn’t trust Sam Altman; otherwise, those people would be working at OpenAI right now.

Despite deep personal grievances, Musk ended the interview with a conciliatory posture. He praised the Anthropic team as “principled and cares about the future of the world,” and called for: “For the benefit of the world, let’s set aside personal differences.” This madman who has gone from rocket launch sites to the AI frontier is betting on the material-abundance future of 2036 with a near-absurd kind of rationality—and you and I can only choose to board the ship.
