A Polymarket account belonging to an aide to the leader of the Reform UK party received $9 million in funds of unknown origin
PANews July 24 news, citing Protos, that an assistant to Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Party in the UK, George Cottrell, received two suspicious transfers totaling about $9 million into his Polymarket account.
An investigation by the Financial Times found that Cottrell’s Polymarket account (username GCottrell93) received about $8.8 million in October 2024—of which $7 million came from an OKX exchange wallet and $1.83 million came from a ChangeNOW wallet—and was used to place bets on Trump winning the U.S. presidential election almost immediately, after which he withdrew around $13 million in profits.
Cottrell was convicted in 2017 for telecom fraud, involving money laundering proceeds from drug transactions. He has long funded Farage and the Reform Party, but related donations were not reported as required, and the matter has been referred to the UK Parliament’s Standards Commissioner. Cottrell continues to place large bets on Polymarket; his largest position is a $71k wager that Vice President JD Vance will win the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.
