Tesla Remains Up 213% in Bitcoin With Nearly 4 Years: Strategic Allocation or Passivity?
Tesla continues to hold 11,509 Bitcoin as confirmed in their latest quarterly report. They have not bought nor sold any of the cryptocurrencies since they acquired it roughly four years ago. With a lot of companies altering their treasury strategies, Tesla's stance on its Bitcoin portfolio is uncharacteristic.
Bitcoin, in the past quarter, saw massive swings, going from roughly $83k to $58k before later recovering. However, as of the second quarter, Tesla reported a loss of roughly $112 million for its BTC. Despite the paper loss, Tesla chose not to sell and stick with their long-term strategy.
Overall Tesla had somewhat mixed earnings with Revenue coming in at $28.2 billion – slightly beating estimates. They fell short on the earnings per share and reported negative free cash flow of about -$1.1 billion for the period. The investment, production costs, and operation of new facilities are all taking a toll on Tesla’s financials.
Tesla's Bitcoin strategy is very different to how most corporate crypto holders operate. The company strategy is actively acquiring new assets on the contrary, whereas Tesla is more hands off. Since their acquisition in 2021, Tesla has done very little. Tesla's strategy for Bitcoin in the treasury can be considered more of a "buy and hold" type strategy.
However, should a company manage its bitcoin like other assets, or should it take the opportunity to buy the dips and accumulate bitcoin? Tesla seems to believe in keeping their Bitcoin as a part of the treasury even if its not being actively traded. The long term investment could possibly have significant value as bitcoin ages. It is interesting to see other corporate entities having differing Bitcoin strategies with a view of making big profits from Bitcoin.
As bitcoin becomes more mature will companies choose to invest actively in digital asset holdings, or hold them long-term and forget about it?
Do you prefer The strategy’s method of collecting bitcoin, or do you prefer Tesla’s method?
