The Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology has released its latest research findings, unveiling a new discovery from Sanxingdui Site No. 3 sacrificial pit: a bronze-crowned, kneeling seated figure sculpture. Through methods such as metallographic analysis, alloy composition testing, and lead isotope comparison, the research team systematically reconstructed the alloy proportions, material sources, and manufacturing process of the artifact, providing new physical evidence for understanding exchanges and interactions between ancient Shu and the Central Plains, and between bronze cultures across the Yangtze River region. Experts said the artifact confirms the “symbiotic coexistence of inner and outer elements” feature of Sanxingdui’s bronze system: the forms and ceremonial shapes originated from Shang culture and civilizations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, while the figure, divine tree, and other motifs were uniquely created by ancient Shu, fully reflecting the development pathway of Chinese civilization as multifaceted yet one, with mutual compatibility and learning.
