July 23 Technical Analysis: Oversold Gold—Be Wary of a Retracement Turning Point

After the gold price broke through the $4,140 resistance level during the U.S. session last night, it continued higher, but the good run didn’t last long. It rose only to $4,166 before turning down. Into the close, the gold price fell back below $4,140 and finally finished at $4,129.

Fundamentals: The Iran–U.S. conflict flipped again, with both sides trading harsh statements. The U.S. Dollar Index surged, and combined with a large amount of profitable positions exiting the market, long sentiment cooled. Follow-up momentum weakened, and multiple factors caused the gold price to turn downward.

On the four-hour timeframe, the gold price is again back below $4,140 and has not managed to stabilize effectively. Also, in the market, oversold conditions are shrinking long-side momentum.

On the hourly timeframe, the Bollinger Bands have opened upward and flattened out. The gold price has fallen below the mid-band. The moving-average system shows the 5MA crossing below the 10MA. Overall, today’s gold is likely to lean toward a downside retracement.

Today, watch the $4,140 long/short transition level from above, as well as the $4,160 high. In terms of trade execution, it is recommended to set up short positions for a move downward near the $4,140–$4,160 range, with a downside target at $4,090!

The pullback signal in gold this round is quite clear—$4,140 couldn’t even be held. If you’re following with short positions, make sure to set your stop-loss.

On the hourly chart, the 5MA has crossed below the 10MA, and the Bollinger middle band has also been broken. There’s a lot of pressure from pullbacks, but the key is whether 4140 can regain and hold above it; otherwise, 4090 below may not hold.
