Why do many swimming pools in the United States need to be maintained with complex procedures so often, rather than simply draining the water, cleaning it, and refilling? A lot of people’s first reaction is: the water is dirty—wouldn’t it be simpler to drain it, replace it, and start over? But in many American households, pools don’t treat the water as a disposable consumable. They see it as a system that needs long-term maintenance.
A swimming pool typically involves multiple steps, such as filtration, circulation, disinfection, and chemical balance. Staff continuously adjust chlorine levels, pH balance, and clean the filters to keep tens of tons of water stable over the long run. The truly expensive part isn’t the water in the pool itself, but the cost to bring the entire system back to stable conditions again. If you drain and refill every time, it not only requires a large amount of new water, but you also have to readjust water quality and reheat it—while potentially increasing the risk of damage to the pool structure.
Behind this is a different kind of systems thinking: a lower-level way to solve problems is to find an issue and then tear everything down and start over; a higher-level way is to build mechanisms so the system can keep running continuously. Many things are like this too. Life isn’t about constantly resetting to zero and starting again—it’s about maintaining your abilities, experience, relationships, and resources, so that past accumulation keeps generating new value. Companies don’t rely on repeatedly restarting from scratch; they evolve through product iteration, organizational optimization, and customer maintenance—so the system keeps improving. A mature society also isn’t built on repeated dramatic changes; it maintains stability in complex systems through rules, institutions, and processes.
A truly strong system isn’t one with no problems—it’s one with the ability to continuously repair, adjust, and evolve.
