US media: The Trump administration is considering launching a military operation in Mali

Golden Finance reported that on July 23, citing the Washington Post, current and former U.S. officials said the Trump administration is considering a military operation against Mali in West Africa to target a group called “Support for Islamic and Muslim Organizations” (JNIM), which is affiliated with al-Qaeda. If approved, Mali would become the eighth country since President Trump began his second term to order airstrikes. However, senior U.S. officials are divided on whether to launch an attack against the armed group. According to several current and former officials, Sebastian Gorka, the senior counterterrorism director at the National Security Council, is an active proponent of using force. When the White House was asked to comment, a government official refused to disclose whether the president intends to carry out a military strike, but said the United States has been urging governments in North Africa and West Africa to “purchase American equipment and services to support their war efforts against terrorists.”
