July 22 news: On July 21, U.S. billionaire Mark Cuban, while participating in the podcast program “All-In Podcast,” said that tech giants such as Google and Meta are putting cash flows into AI infrastructure while also taking on debt amounting to several thousand billion dollars to build data centers—essentially betting that future demand will keep growing and that the technology roadmap will not undergo major changes.
However, he cautioned that AI efficiency could still see a huge breakthrough, which would significantly reduce the demand for computing power and electricity. Just like the fiber-optics industry, which quickly shifted from supply shortage to a large amount of idle capacity, high-priced data centers built today may also be devalued significantly in the future due to excess capacity. In his view, AI demand will indeed grow, but the risk remains very high when using decades-long debt to bet on markets 10 or 20 years down the line.
