The parent company of The Wall Street Journal, News Corp, has sued the privacy browser company Brave.
It accuses Brave of scraping articles without permission and then reselling them to AI companies for profit.
If the court finds Brave infringed, even one article could lead to damages of $150k.
This lawsuit was kicked off first by Brave.
Last year, News Corp only asked it to stop using its content, but Brave sued first, asking the judge to confirm its conduct was legal—now it has been countersued again.
Brave’s crawler is accused of hiding its identity, making it hard for media outlets to detect and preventing it from being blocked as directly as ordinary search engines.
After the articles are scraped, they are processed into summaries of up to about 250 words, placed into a paid service called Data for AI API, which is mainly sold to AI companies.
