Galaxy Digital establishes a $5 million fund to drive Bitcoin post-quantum research and development

On July 22, Galaxy Digital announced the launch of a dedicated R&D support program, allocating $5 million to advance technical research related to digital asset networks resisting quantum computing risks. The program is open for developers to apply, with support covering areas such as post-quantum signature scheme proposals, asset account migration tools, and security testing and audits. The firm said it expects to attract more industry participants to contribute and invest together, accelerating the deployment and iteration of relevant cryptographic technology solutions.

Industry data indicates that if, in the future, high-performance quantum devices can break through existing cryptographic systems, a large amount of on-chain assets will face security vulnerabilities. Although the industry’s mainstream view is that, in the short term, quantum computing cannot pose a material threat to existing networks, upgrading the underlying protocols requires long-term coordinated efforts among developers, platforms, and a broad range of users. Relevant security preparations need to be planned in advance.

This news reminds us that post-quantum cryptography really should be put on the agenda. While a $5 million R&D fund isn’t a lot, it can serve as a strong example.
