Golden Finance reports that on July 22, Protos reported that AI shopping agent developer ORO disclosed losses of about $630k due to a suspected North Korean hacker attack. The attacker used a compromised Telegram account to send ORO employees a fake Microsoft Teams link, luring them into installing a malicious extension. After stealing data for nearly a month, the attacker on July 13 stole 147k Alpha tokens. ORO is highly confident the attack came from the North Korean hacker group Sapphire Sleet.
ORO also admitted to its own security oversight—because the Bittensor protocol lacks sufficient support for hardware wallets, the company “temporarily” set owners’ keys as software wallets, violating its internal principle of prioritizing hardware wallets, which led to the keys being stolen from the compromised computer. ORO said it is working with exchanges, law enforcement agencies, and Bittensor ecosystem partners to recover the stolen assets, and emphasized that its subnet is operating normally; other wallets, user data, and validator signature keys were not affected.
