Analysis: U.S. stock short positions have risen to a high level, and the S&P 500 short ratio is approaching its highest level since 2010
Odaily Planet Daily: The Kobeissi Letter on X stated that data shows U.S. stock short positions continue to increase. Currently, the percentage of shares held short in S&P 500 index constituents has risen to about 3.7% of float, approaching the highest level since 2010; the short position ratio for Russell 3000 index constituents has risen to about 6.1%, also nearing historical highs.
Both indicators have continued to rise since the beginning of 2025. In addition, the short position ratio for all stocks listed on the NYSE reached 9.0% in late June, setting a new all-time high. For comparison, this metric peaked at about 5.0% during the 2008 financial crisis and at about 6.0% during the 2020 pandemic period.
