Choosing Matters More Than Striving

Life’s greatest strategy has never been tactical diligence—it’s the choice you make at the critical moment: choosing to be the general of your fate, or continuing to be a slave to life.

Choice is the beginning of the divide.

A slave is not a label of identity, but a mental prison. He passively accepts arrangements, complains about his surroundings, and attributes things that don’t go well to his background, luck, or other people. A general is the opposite. Even when stuck in mud, his eyes remain sharp—he chooses to take responsibility for himself, chooses to get fully ready even when there’s no applause. The difference between that one thought is worlds apart. Choosing to be a general means you take the initiative to raise the banner of your life—even if the banner pole is a broken branch, you still make it fly in the wind.

But choice is only the starting point; the true ordeal is in what comes “next.”

From slave to general, there are no ladders—only steps, and each one is built from sweat and blood blisters. Effort turns the direction you chose into the path under your feet; persistence is believing there is light ahead when the road is packed with thorns and the sky is dark. Those stories that seem to become famous overnight are, behind the scenes, made up of countless moments of clenching your teeth at 4:00 a.m., the messy struggle of getting back up after failure, and the solitary courage to hold on to your original intention amid doubt.

Don’t be afraid of a low starting point—what you should fear is that you’ve never truly set out. Don’t be afraid of slow progress—what you should fear is that you turn back halfway. A general is not someone you’re born as; he is the survivor who stands up from the pile of soldiers’ bones. The reason he survives isn’t luck. In every moment he falls, he chooses to hold on for one more step.

Today, ask yourself: Do you want to keep “clocking in” your life with complaints and comfort, or do it now—grip the sword of your destiny? Choose the general, then use day after day of effort and unyielding persistence to fight this battle through. One day, you will stand at the height you once used to look up to and say, casually and lightly: Back then, I didn’t choose wrong.

Because only by choosing to become your own general do you deserve that future version of yourself—having returned after a hundred battles, yet still young. Let’s encourage each other.
