Trump’s chief artificial intelligence safety officer resigns; previously took part in export-control negotiations with Anthropic

Jinse Finance reported that on July 21, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Commerce confirmed that Chris Fuhr, the Trump administration’s chief AI safety officer, left his post after serving for only three months. Fuhr previously served as director of the Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center (CAISI), where he led a voluntary review mechanism for mainstream AI models implemented by the U.S. government. The Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center is affiliated with the Department of Commerce; it is a core industry-facing institution that is responsible for advancing commercial AI testing and related research. At the time of his departure, the White House and lawmakers across the United States were engaged in a power struggle over how to regulate this emerging technology. The spokesperson said, “After Chris leaves, Dr. Arvind Raman, director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will take over oversight of the Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center and serve as the center’s acting director.” Raman will also lead the selection process for the center’s new permanent director, with the candidate expected to be announced in the coming weeks. A representative from the Department of Commerce who asked not to be named said that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick hopes to identify a candidate with solid academic knowledge in the field of AI and strong professional capabilities.
