A grand production goal was set in the factory: this year, we would produce 10,000 bicycles.
The workers were full of drive, working overtime day and night.
When the year-end figures were counted, only 300 bicycles had been produced.
The leaders called a meeting and happily announced, “Although the numbers are not large, the quality is very high! More importantly, everyone contributed the same effort—no one was slacking.”
An old worker muttered under his breath: “Then what are we supposed to ride to work?”
The leader waved his hand: “Just help each other! If anyone has extra bicycles, lend them to comrades who don’t have one. That’s the warmth of our collective.”
The next year, the target was changed to 20,000 bicycles… and as a result, only 200 bicycles were produced.
Everyone remained just as happy, because “the gap hasn’t widened.”
