Burnham wins support from most UK Labour MPs, effectively securing the party leadership position

On September 9 local time, on the first day of the Labour Party leadership election in the UK, Andy Burnham secured nominations from 322 of the 403 Labour MPs, which has essentially locked in the leadership position and he is expected to take over as UK Prime Minister. According to the Labour Party leadership election rules, candidates need nominations from at least 81 Labour MPs to move to the next stage of the race. At present, apart from Burnham, no other Labour MP has received nominations. Currently, Burnham is only one step away from securing the leadership post. He has received 322 nominations; he only needs one more MP’s nomination. Other potential challengers will then be unable to obtain the required 81 nominations to stand, and Burnham will become the only candidate. Despite his overwhelming support, under the election procedure Burnham still needs to complete the relevant process by July 17 before he will be officially declared elected as Labour Party leader. After that, he will accept the King’s appointment and serve as UK Prime Minister. (CGTN News)
