AI and stablecoin banking infrastructure company Augustus has completed a $180 million Series B round, valuing the company at $1 billion. Tiger Global led the investment, with participation from Hummingbird, QED, and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle, and Deel. The funds will be used to expand into Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, and to develop a core banking platform that can provide 24/7 USD accounts and settlement services. Augustus previously received conditional approval from the U.S. OCC to establish a full-service national bank; final opening still requires completing regulatory requirements. (CoinDesk)

Augustus’s model is quite interesting—it combines AI with a stablecoin banking operation, and it has already received pre-approval for a national bank charter from the OCC. Once it is implemented, it can offer legal USD digital accounts, which is a real game-changer for regions in Latin America and Africa facing USD shortages.

$180 million, with Tiger leading the round—traditional capital seems to have strong confidence in stablecoin infrastructure. The key is whether, once regulation is implemented, it can truly serve emerging markets.

Seeing that Circle and Nubank’s founder also invested indicates that leading players in the payments and stablecoin ecosystem all have confidence in this direction. If it can connect cross-border settlement and compliant USD accounts, it could become a Web3 alternative to SWIFT.

The intended use of funds is very clear: global expansion and the development of core banking platforms, but compliance risks are significant, with regulations differing across emerging markets.

Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, precisely targeting high-inflation areas.
