Video｜OpenAI Board Chair Discusses Kimi K3: Open-Source Models Don’t Necessarily Cost Less

On July 20, Bret Taylor, chair of the OpenAI board, was asked in a CNBC interview how he viewed China’s newly released open-source model Kimi K3. He said that when businesses choose an AI model, what they truly care about isn’t whether it’s “open-source” or “closed-source,” but whether the token costs incurred can deliver enough real value. In his view, open-source models are not necessarily cheaper, because completing the same task may require consuming more tokens. By contrast, leading models such as OpenAI and Anthropic may have higher per-token prices, but they are also more efficient and capable. Therefore, whether a model is worth it can’t be determined by token unit price alone; you also have to consider the total cost to complete the task and the final outcome.
