Crypto news: CoinShares announced it has entered the UCITS fund market in Europe with €263.0 billion, launching a regulated Bitcoin mining ETF, aiming to make its digital asset strategies available to institutional investors who were previously unable to access its products due to investment restrictions. The ETF began trading on Tuesday on the Deutsche Börse Xetra. CoinShares said the launch is intended to make its investment strategy accessible to European institutional investors, including pension funds, insurance companies, and private banks. By adopting the UCITS framework, CoinShares enables these investors to access regulated digital asset investment products through structures that have been accepted by its internal investment rules. CoinShares co-founder and CEO Jean-Marie Mognetti said: “This is not just the launch of another investment product, but a milestone for our entry into the UCITS market.”

This ETF arguably opens a door for traditional finance, but the risks of a Bitcoin mining ETF are also not small—energy consumption and the uncertainty of regulatory policies are major factors. Whether pension funds are really willing to put real money into it remains an open question.

Previously, pension funds that wanted to allocate to Bitcoin could only do so via futures or Grayscale-style premium products. Now, with a mining ETF that has UCITS certification, the entry barrier has indeed been lowered. But mining itself is a high-energy-intensive industry—will ESG standards end up blocking it? European environmental groups are not to be underestimated; this remains to be seen.

At last it’s not an air-coin ETF anymore. The mining industry has real assets backing it, even though volatility is still high.

CoinShares has made a smart move here—first positioning itself within the European UCITS framework, which can pave the way for other digital-asset ETFs to be launched later as well. However, the special nature of mining ETFs is that they are not perfectly correlated with the coin price; they are also influenced by hashrate and electricity costs.
